Americana in Slide Film

A happy accident in film advancing, and another shot, all on slide film (Fujifilm Fujichrome Provia 100F (RDP III)) shot with my Mamiyaflex TLR camera.

But first, I’d like to thank everyone who supported us with the American Eagle Outfitters contest. In the end, our ‘Back Pocket’ photo made it to second place for that category with over 700 votes! Also, several of our images made the top 50 in most categories, so they’ll be flashing in Times Square this week.

Vote For Us!!

August 10th Update: My back-pocket photo (Photo 2) made the Times Square billboard at the end of Week 3!!  Hawaii/Army represent!

Week 4 is the last week before the final round, and we need to win one of the categories if we’re going to go onto the final round, and hopefully win Sara a photoshoot and the rest of us some cash and validation! ;)

Original Post:

Hey all!

So, the purpose of that last Americana-themed shoot was to have our model, Sara, enter photos in the American Eagle Outfitters photo contest (and have a happy fun day, since her husband is currently deployed – I can relate to the need for fun!). If you could please click the following links and vote for all our photos, hopefully we can win!  The grand prize is $3000 and a photo shoot by American Eagle for Sara, so let’s get this soldier her modeling gig.  The following photos are a mix of mine, Michelle’s, and Phil’s…pick your favorites, or if you have time, vote for them all! :)

Note: You don’t have to choose, you can vote for each photo once. Thank you!

Everyone on this shoot but me is a soldier in the United States Army (Sara’s husband is also a soldier, and currently deployed), and of course, I am an Army wife.  And yes, that’s me with a makeup credit…us three girls are tomboys who only barely know our way around hair and makeup, but we made it work!  I also made the dreamcatcher shoulder-duster earring, and I definitely want to make more. It was a fun afternoon for sure!

JPAC Forensic Science Academy

Today, I had the opportunity to visit the Forensic Science Academy at JPAC’s Central Identification Laboratory, which is the largest skeletal identification laboratory in the world.  Though I’ve attended JPAC events before, such as the arrival ceremony for American remains, this was my first extensive time in one of the labs, giving the attendees a crash course in forensic anthropology.

As I’ve blogged before, the mission of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command is “to achieve the fullest possible accounting of all Americans missing as a result of our nations past conflicts.” The command was created in 2003, and consist of more than 400 joint military (all branches) and civilian personnel. The Forensic Science Academy was opened in the CIL in 2008, and is a very competitive and advanced 5-course program where students of forensic anthropology receive a variety of training in the lab, as well as spending five weeks on a military search and recovery mission in Southeast Asia.

We started off with a presentation given by Dr. Robert Mann, the director of the Forensic Science Academy, which covered the basics of JPAC’s mission techniques and processes.  He told us an interesting story of how they identified a bunker in Vietnam based on a survivor’s memory of throwing down a sardine can and spoon near the bunker’s door just as a battle began – years later, after excavating the bunker they found the sardine can and spoon right where the survivor said it would be.

Osaka 2011 – Day 4

And here we are, the final post of my Osaka trip!

My fourth and final day in Japan began with a new sampling of canned cold coffee, as usual, and then a quick morning walk around Dōtonbori for some street photos. Some of my stops included the Shouchikuza, a kabuki theater, and the Dōtonbori Don Quijote location.

Osaka 2011 – Day 3

Sorry for the delay in this post! I returned from Japan on Saturday, and spent most of the weekend catching up on sleep before shooting a wedding yesterday evening.  I do have my ‘Scenes from Japan’ collection up on Nonstop Honolulu right now, which features some images from the previous days, as well as previews of the not-yet-posted Day 4, but let’s get on with Day 3!

My day started with walking across the street from our hotel, the Dōtonbori Hotel, to grab a coffee from the Lawsons convenience store. I’ve never seen such a wide selection of canned coffee and tea – for me, it’s heaven. After settling on my coffee of the day, I joined Burt and Mari for a quick stroll around the area. I even stumbled across a Lush, which I’ve also been to in Florence, Dublin, Vancouver, and Auckland, besides the American locations. It’s now on my travel checklist to always try to find an international Lush!

Osaka 2011 – Day 1

I apologize for the tardiness of this post, but this has been the first chance I’ve had to grab a few hours before rushing off to another adventure!

My first day in Osaka began in Honolulu with a chants, song, and dance at Gate 34 as Hawaiian Airlines and the community came together to celebrate the first departure of their inaugural route to Kansai Airport.  After the speeches, hula, and traditional Japanese fan dance, a blessing was made and the maile leaf was untied, and our trip was officially underway. The crew gathered for some final photos, and then we all boarded to settle in for the eight hour flight to Japan.
