Tonight, we braved the wind, rain, and freezing temperatures up on Haleakala to capture the biggest full moon in 18 years, known as the “super moon”. Although we missed the moon rise due to bad weather, once the bright moonlight broke through the clouds I managed to capture a ‘moonbow’ at the summit! Here are some of my photos from tonight:

A Christmas morning wave with a rainbow at Maui’s North Shore.
Koda loves Kula so much better than Honolulu…green grass, cool mornings, and all the sticks she can chew!

…commentary on television shows!
This will give me something to write about other than just my photos. However, if you come to this blog looking only for photos, feel free to click the ‘photo’ tag in the right-hand column in order to filter out these non-photo oriented posts.
It’s 1:39AM according to my computer clock, and I have been up since about 6:00am, because Daeja and I had another an all-day shoot on Maui today. We got back at 8:40pm, and I’ve been catching up on both work and TV shows. It’s funny to me that there are so many drama/comedy shows I want to watch this season…perhaps reality TV is finally on its way out? (Although I do allow myself the guilty pleasure of America’s Next Top Model…but only for the photo shoots, I swear!) I have 12 on my Hulu subscription list, plus the Vampire Diaries on CW and How I Met Your Mother on CBS. But, as I was going through my list of shows I plan to be watching over this next year…I realized something. Every single TV show I watch (besides the Daily Show and Colbert Report) are somehow related to vampires.
Buffy/Angel Connections
Bones – Stars David Boreanaz, who played Angel, a vampire.
Castle – Stars Nathan Fillion, who appeared as Caleb in Season 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Dollhouse – Stars Eliza Dushku, who played Faith the Vampire Slayer.
Family Guy – Seth Green, the voice of Chris, played Oz the werewolf on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Fringe – This one’s stretching…it stars Joshua Jackson, who used to be on Dawson’s Creek, which also starred James Van Der Beek, who appeared in an episode of How I Met Your Mother, which also stars Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
EDIT: “For Fringe, you could also go with: Stars Joshua Jackson, who was in Cruel Intentions with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” – Thanks Cameron!
Glee – Features actress Jayma Mays, who appeared in an episode of How I Met Your Mother, which also stars Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Heroes – Again, actress Jayma Mays -> How I Met Your Mother -> Alyson Hannigan, as she also had a part in Heroes. Also, Dania Ramirez, who played Maya on Heroes, was a potential slayer in season 7 of Buffy.
House – Several former Buffy the Vampire Slayer actors have appeared on House as patients, including Felicia Day (Violet), Adam Busch (Warren), Marc Blucas (Riley), and Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn).
How I Met Your Mother – Specifically, Alyson Hannigan has a starring role, but Tom Lenk (Andrew), Amy Acker (Fred) and Alexis Denisof (Wesley) have had guest spots.
Legend of the Seeker – Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia, is joining the cast for Season 2 of Legend of the Seeker.
Merlin – Stars Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as King Uther.
Other
True Blood – A show about vampires.
The Vampire Diaries – A show about vampires.
Yes, I probably thought about this too much, and yes, I plan to be watching too much television, but isn’t that what dual monitors are for?
And here’s another Instax photo from today’s shoot. I’ll post more when I can!
(And maybe if I always post at least one photo with my non-photo oriented posts…my blog will still look pretty?)
Once again, I got to photograph one of my favorite families in the world, the Hiratas! Jonathan (light blue overshirt) is one of my oldest friends and currently working in New York City, and I’ve been photographing his sister Jen and her two little boys for the past couple years now. It’s crazy how big they’ve gotten! This time, we did a sunset beach shoot at Kamaole Beach Park on Maui.

My friends and I have long participated in the summer obon festivals on Maui, and luckily my trip back home coincided with our favorite, the Makawao obon held at the Makawao Hongwanji. As Gabe was still on Oahu, I went with my friends Sarah and Dustin. Here’s some shots, taken with the Canon EF 35mm 1.4L prime lens:

And here’s me!

After the test shoot last week Sunday, I had my old friend Mika Yamaguchi come up to my house for a visit along with Bristol Dunlap, an artist/musician whom I’ve long admired. With Kaeo assisting with the lights, we had an impromptu photoshoot session in my yard while Bristol played for us.

Check out Bristol’s blog for examples of her artwork, photography, and music!
And here’s other photos from the session.
On July 26th, Daeja had a test shoot with Chloe in Haliimaile, with me there assisting and Kaeo using my 5DMK2 to video. I didn’t take too many shots as there was a lot of light/reflector holding to be had, but here’s a two shot with my 70-200mm 2.8L IS lens:
But, Kaeo made off with my camera after these shots to take advantage of its gorgeous HD video capabilities (and I’m still waiting to see video, Kaeo!) So, I decided to experiment with the capabilities of my Canon G9 while photographing Chloe and our male model, Joe:

Gone to Maui until Wednesday!
(Also, don’t worry, I’m not checking any cameras etc. through luggage!)
